Symbolic Action PDF Print E-mail

The „Symbolic Action" of the JOC Europe asbl, "Young workers reinventing tomorrow's world of work!"  23-26.11. 2006 in Passau/Germany

1. Background and objectives of the activity

More than 100 young people from eight European countries met for four days in Passau to discuss about their visions and conceptions of the future work and life in Europe. This activity represented the climax of a three years process during which many projects and actions were organised and implemented at local, regional, national and European level.

2. Programme and results

2.1 The process in the national Movements

At the beginning of the meeting the three years process was briefly recalled and each national Movement got the opportunity to present actions/projects which had been implemented during this process. The presentations showed how much courage and energy young people develop when they try to find answers to their various problems on the training and labour market and gave the participants the possibility to get some small insight in the reality of the others which created a good basis for mutual understanding.

Developing a New Concept of Work PDF Print E-mail
Work occupies a central position in our western cultures
  • ImageIt is an unavoidable element of our identity. Introducing oneself is based on what one person does – his/her job. Many people build most of their social links, relationships through work and the contrary is only true for the unemployed.  Even the YCW’s identity depends on a professional aspect: young, Christians and workers.
  • It gives access or rights to health services, family subsidies for children, right to a pension, etc.
  • It determinates our situation in society, whereas, in the Middle Ages, it was birth that determined this situation.  Aristocrats e.g. were not allowed to work (even not after having become poor) but would lose their position if they started to work. Today only a minority rejects work or only wants to work part-time, because they see another important dimension of life and feel threatened by the importance work may take in their lives.

European Actions PDF Print E-mail

The idea is to ensure the coordination of experiences in the different countries and regions, and to provide means of training and education that supplement these experiences and provide opportunities to experience cultural diversity.

The following means used to achieve these goals:

Coordination structures:

  • ImageContinental meeting: a statutory meeting for the exchange of information, training and decision-making. Takes place once a year and is attended by a leader from each country.
  • European Team: Two leaders working full-time on coordination visiting, assisting and supporting the different countries. They are also responsible for the development and implementation of the European Plans decided upon by the different countries at the Continental meeting.

Training plans and structures:

  • Training seminars attended by delegates from all the different countries dealing with various areas of action such as unemployment, training, social exclusion, etc.
  • Opportunities for the countries to share information and compare and discuss their experiences and projects..
  • Longer term training projects relating to skills for working with young people and leading actions in an educational manner in today's society.

European campaigns:

On special subjects, with all the countries working together and using common means:

  • to identify themselves (public image)
  • to meet and exchange ideas
  • for training
  • for dissemination of the facts about the situation of young people in Europe.

We are currently developing a campaign which we have entitled, No to the social exclusion of youth, yes to an intercultural society.
