17th of November: Get Ready!
The 17th of November, the International day of students, is now getting closer. As you know the GA of OBESSU adopted a resolution which engages OBESSU and its member organisations in promoting the 17th of November's celebration. We will mobilize on the basis of the political stand points contained in the Final Statement of the European Student Assembly held in Malmo, Sweden, during the European Social Forum 2008. Therefore the board would like to foster every member organisation to promote events, demonstrations, symbolic actions, conferences or any other activity to promote the celebration of the 17th of November and to support students' rights and public, free, democratic education for all as stated in the Final Statements. Of course every organisation should also take advantage of this day to put forward its campaigns and demands at national level.

UDS - "Reforms" of Education in Italy
In the last two weeks a great movement, especially formed by students, has grown in Italy, putting together school students, students fro university ,parents, teachers and even principals against two discussed law proposed by the conservative government.
The first it is the financial decree number 133 which contains some articles regarding huge cutbacks of the funding that financed the public university and the research (about 8 billion euros),the possibility to transform public universities in private foundations and the block of the turn-over for teachers at university(just one every five years will be employed instead of the already insufficient number of before: two).
The second it is the law number 137 (approved with few votes in the Parliament after a month of big demonstrations against this law, with more than 450 demonstrations all over Italy) which establishes the reintroduction of the evaluation of the behaviour as a mark conditioning the fact to move up the class, the compulsory age for schooling has been lowered from up to 16 to 14,at elementary school there will be just a teacher per class, and many school will not be able anymore to be opened also in the afternoon.
